An Inconvenient Duke begins the Lords of the Armory series with a story that will grab your attention from the beginning to the final page. I was quickly drawn into this story not only for the romantic suspense of it but also for the world-building that lays the foundation of the thread involving the Armory fighting against Scepter that will be woven throughout this series. In this opening story, we’ll meet not only Dani and Marcus but the men who will come to see Marcus as their leader in the upcoming fight against an unseen enemy that has no qualms about fighting dirty. So, yes, there is world-building in An Inconvenient Duke, but I expect that in the first story of any series and especially when such a vile villain of an organization is involved.
I liked and respected Dani from the first meeting. She’s a woman far ahead of her time, in an era that saw women as little more than property or bargaining chips for family members, a time when a man (father or husband) could easily beat a woman into submission to the point of death was commonplace. Dani is fighting for those women, freeing them from their abusers as best and as discreetly as she can. What she’s doing is not without risks as she is fully aware.
Marcus is a man to admire, a former general in the battle against Napoleon he’s now home, a newly declared Duke and discovering that his beloved sister’s death was not an accident. He’s a leader, strong yet not afraid to show his softer, protective side to a woman he’s falling for. Unfortunately for Marcus, Dani doesn’t believe she needs, certainly doesn’t want any man’s “protection” as she is quite capable of handling her own affairs – right up until she isn’t. The bantering between Dani and Marcus often gave me amused laughter and definitely knowing smiles throughout this book. They fit well together and that shows.
An Inconvenient Duke will provide you with a really good, solid story, believable characters, vile villains to loathe, a mystery to solve, dangerous moments, and steamy encounters as well. This is a story of two strong, independent, somewhat stubborn people falling in love and facing danger head-on. I loved this opening story of the Lords of the Armory series and I’m definitely keeping an eye out for the release of the next story.
