Cover Description:
Navy SEAL Reece Browning sacrificed body and soul in the line of duty. He survived torture at the hands of America’s enemies, but lost his career and his voice in the process. Traumatized and desperate to get his PTSD under control, Reece escapes to Eagle Ridge Ranch. Under the big Texas sky, he finds peace, a renewed sense of purpose—and a woman who makes him feel like a man again. Her smile lights up his dark days, and her caress helps him forget the night terrors.
Ex-Marine Gina Wilson also bears painful scars: emotional wounds inflicted by men she once trusted with her life. She has fought hard to overcome her demons and build a good life for her daughter, and Reece is too intense, too damaged, too raw to let into her heart. Yet she’s drawn irresistibly to his steely gaze and heated embrace. No one else understands what it’s like to suffer in silence. And when Gina’s daughter is threatened, it’s Reece who risks everything to save the day.

“War is hell.” That’s not some catchphrase from the past, it is true no matter what generation has to go to war to defend. Reece knows that far too well. His life is now a living, everyday hell from which he has yet to find an escape. The loss of his are is one part, the constant demons is another. Some medical personnel would call it PTSD… he simply calls it life as he now knows it. He’s come to Eagle Ridge Ranch to try to get some parts of his life back, some purpose, some relief from the demons. What he finds there will be something even more precious – acceptance and the love of two females, one young, one just the right age for him. Together sweet, adorable Piper and her mother Gina will deliver him from those demons in ways he never believed possible.
Gina is no stranger to the damages that war can leave behind, even on those who look perfectly fine. Mental, emotional scars are just as real as the physical injuries the brave former military personnel of Eagle Ridge Ranch bear every single day. On several levels she understands Reece’s pain, yet he scares her as well. She’s not ready to trust any man let alone one so damaged and intense as Reece is. Trouble is her daughter adores this man, and is constantly scheming ways to bring him into their lives on a more personal level. While Gina fights the attraction, she’s smart enough to realize that he pulls at her, touches a part of her that she thought she’d lost forever. Soon she’ll have to trust Reece to save the most precious thing she’s ever known, her daughter.
The star of this story is definitely Piper. Man can that little girl talk. I’m really not sure who Reece fell in love with first, Gina or her precious daughter, Piper. I enjoyed Reece and Gina’s story. Even with a rocky start they blended together very well. Sure, some things happened quickly, but it wasn’t unbelievable to me. Secondary characters always play a huge part in any story for me, and we were treated to some glimpses of of stories past and stories yet to come.
In all, this was a very satisfying story that i’d definitely recommend. Now the wait for the next story in the Black Eagle Ops series.
