When it comes to caring for the furry residents of St. Helena, California, groomer and pet rescuer Shay Michaels can handle anything. Humans are another story, though especially Deputy Jonah Baudouin. He’s the town’s resident superhero: upright, uptight, and jaw-droppingly gorgeous, even when he’s investigating complaints about Shay’s beloved foster animals. And that spells danger for Shay, a free spirit who can’t risk trusting the wrong person again.
Jonah and Shay have been circling each other ever since she came to town, and he’s running out of reasons to “not” kiss her senseless. But this deputy is a straight shooter with his eye on the sheriff’s badge. He can’t afford to get involved with Shay, a chaos magnet with luscious curves who’s liable to turn his career and his life upside down. He enforces laws. She breaks them repeatedly. Keeping her out of trouble is becoming a full-time job and it’s one he hopes is never going to end.
Read on for my thoughts on Need You For Keeps. No true spoilers, promise.
Shay and Jonah’s romance depends so much on her animals, and his bid for the election as the next Sheriff. With a bashing campaign against Shay’s pet limited home and her new pet shop on the rise, and the folks against her getting down and dirty she’s in some real trouble.
Ever since Shay’s move to St. Helena two things have been on her radar – the pets that she fosters in order for them to finally get their forever homes, and the handsome deputy who most often is the one who gets to call on her when something goes wrong. And things always go wrong for Shay. While having Jonah as a neighbor is a bonus, always finding herself on the shaky side of the legal fence isn’t as fun. But if rescuing adorable kittens and three legged dogs is illegal, well sign Shay up… even if it means that she has gone over the max pets allowed per house for St. Helena.
Need You For Keeps is an adorable love story, one not only between the main characters but also the lovable adoptable pets this story highlights. While the romance moves slowly, once Jonah and Shay decide that they are worth the risk, the pages heat up. There are misunderstandings, stubbornness and some extremely nasty townsfolk involved, but then it’s a small town and everyone knows about everything. Shay is a charming lady, she’s had a rough life and doesn’t trust very well so for her to open up to Jonah is huge. Jonah has been carrying the world around on his shoulders, or so it seems. When he finally sees what he has done with his life, it’s time for a big change for him.
The story is charming and interesting, the characters believable. I would definitely recommend Need You For Keeps for any romance reader. It’s just the start for the Heroes of St. Helena series, be sure to follow it as the townsfolk are simply charming.
