Mercy Davis, left alone in the world when her mother passed away, must leave her home in the goldfields of California and create a new life for herself. With no money whatsoever and no friends to ask for help, she takes a risk and hops aboard an eastward-bound train, heading for Denver, where she believes she will start afresh.
Heston Granger leads a simple life working at the railroad station. Everything in his world is predictable and routine until he opens the door to the stock car and discovers not only a dozen cows without an owner but a stowaway who happens to be a young woman. As he learns her story, he finds himself eager to help her reach for her dreams – and perhaps a forgetful angel is just who they need to give them a little boost in the right direction.
Riding the Rails is the 41st title in the multi-author series, Cowboys and Angels For a complete list of titles and authors in this series please visit the Cowboys and Angels page.
(Now that the Cowboys and Angels series has ended with the 49th title – I need to binge read to catch up – be sure to look for the spin-off The Matchmaker’s Ball series)
Title: Riding the Rails
Series: Cowboys and Angels #41

My Rating: 4 stars
RIDING THE RAILS brings us a daring young woman who simply wants a better life than what she’s known hitching a ride on the cargo cars of the railroad on her way to Denver, CO – although this time she ended up in a cattle car with some very stinky and vocal cows. Next stop, Creede, CO and perhaps her future if she’s open-minded enough to set aside one dream for the reality right in front of her.
I loved Mercy and Heston together. The young woman in disguise and the hard-working railroad employee with a heart of gold fit so well together – and with some help or, well, some confused help from Mercy’s guardian angel they’ll have themselves an adventure and a happily ever after… eventually.
It’s always a treat to return to Creede (how I’ll miss this town when I finally finish this series – although spin-offs work quite well, too) and see how or who the angels will be helping find each other this time. A new guardian angel who doesn’t quite have it all together yet will make mistakes, but with love, good intentions and a unique way where things work out well in spite of it all. If you’ve loved the Cowboys & Angels series, then you’ll fall in love once again. A short story but with a powerful, loving touch – I’d definitely recommend this one.
