Ruth Barnes has been a cook at the Brody Hotel almost since the business first opened. She’s seen countless friends fall in love and get married, and she wonders why such things haven’t happened for her. Maybe she’s not meant to find romance – maybe she should concentrate on opening the bakery she’s dreamed of owning.
Alex Barker has come to town on business – to help his brother purchase a larger ranch. He wasn’t expecting to come face-to-face with the world’s most beautiful woman when he arrived, nor to be cut down by her within minutes of meeting her. He also didn’t expect to become embroiled in something that could cost him his life.
Perhaps the so-called magic of the Brody Hotel can set things right again.

Title: The Turn of a Wheel
Series: Kansas Crossroads #17
Author: Amelia C. Adams
Published: March 21, 2019
My Rating: 4.5 stars
I have followed the Kansas Crossroads series from the very beginning, and yet I knew Ruth only from the mentions of her ruling the kitchen and the wonderful meals she created. I loved getting to know the woman behind the meals served at the Brody Hotel in THE TURN OF A WHEEL.
Ruth is at somewhat of a crossroads herself. She’s watched friends fall in love and make their lives away from the Brody Hotel but still, she remains and without any potential husband in sight begins to think of life away from all she’s known for years. It doesn’t help that the brother of the man who’d turned a blind eye to his employee’s actions shows up at the hotel celebrating the purchase of that ranch to friends of Ruth’s. Unfortunately, Ruth paints them both with the same brush even though Alex is far, far different from his brother.
It won’t be long before Ruth realizes her mistake as Alex jumps in to help when needed and ends up badly injured. It’s during Alex’s recovery time that he and Ruth really have the chance to honestly see each other for who they are. Changes are in the wind and Ruth has decisions to make – now she just has to let her heart lead her to the right one.
There are some twists in THE TURN OF A WHEEL that are a part of life at any time in history. To see those issues so clearly stated and dealt with is just one of the reasons that I will always pick up an Amelia C. Adams title, no matter what genre she’s writing in at the moment. I loved Ruth’s and Alex’s story, enjoyed my time back at the Brody Hotel with old friends, and would not hesitate to recommend this story or any in the Kansas Crossroads series to readers who simply love a good story, an even better romance.
