Cover Description:
In Nugget, California, a tiny town tucked into the Sierra Nevada mountains, luck is what you make it, and love is never far behind…
From his humble beginnings in Nugget, Lucky Rodriguez has become a champion on the rodeo circuit, truly living up to his name in every regard. But when he returns home, he gets something success can’t buy: a daughter he never knew he had. And the girl’s mother, an old friend he has hasn’t thought about since, now touches his heart like no buckle bunny ever could.
Tawny Wade hasn’t always had luck on her side. She fell for a boy she couldn’t have, lost her parents too young, and now her daughter needs a transplant she can’t provide. But if Lucky is a stem cell match, all that could change. The trouble is, Lucky’s got a past in Nugget that makes him off-limits as anything more than a donor for her daughter. And yet, Tawny’s never stopped loving the man who now holds her family’s fate in his cowboy-callused hands.
Read on for my thoughts on Getting Lucky. No true spoilers, promise.
Getting Lucky is a story that reminds me so much of an onion – layers upon layers of an emotional story and it will make you cry. About ten years ago Tawny and lucky had a one night stand, one amazing night that Lucky never thought much about again, one night that gave Tawny a miracle as she looked into the beautiful eyes of the daughter that one night brought into her life.
Tawny had loved Luke with the passion that only the youth can experience. Lucky saw her as a friend and the young woman he turned to one fateful night and then walked away from without a backward glance.
Katie needs a transplant. Now it is her only hope – and that hard fact brings Tawny to Lucky’s door to finally tell him about the daughter he never knew about and to ask for his help in saving their daughter’s life.
Getting Lucky is a heart wrenching love story. One with several ‘loves’ involved. It is a combination of joy and desperation, deceit and truth, love and hate – and the many ways that one single act can change lives far beyond the two people intimately involved. There are villains to hate, despicable people who you will want to see very bad things happen to… over and over. There are innocents who got caught in the crossfire. And there is a love that will overpower all of the foolishness going on – if two people are brave enough to risk everything on each other.
This is one of those novels that even if you haven’t read the Nugget series – you still need to give this one a chance to touch your heart, and maybe open up a whole new series to devour. I absolutely loved Tawny and Lucky’s story. Life happens and it is what we make of it, once we know all the facts. This one needs to be on your reading list.
*I received an e-ARC of Getting Lucky from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
