A brown-eyed bastard with nothing to lose
As the illegitimate son of a duke, Bramwell Wesley Hallowsby grew up tough, on the fringes of society, learning to hide his hurt and cynicism with charm and Town polish. He’s carved out a place for himself as a mercenary, serving as bodyguard and general strong arm for the peerage. Bram has nothing to lose… and he’s exactly what Maybelle “Bluebell” Ballenger needs.
Meets his match in a blue-eyed beauty with everything to hide
Maybelle needs a mentor to teach her to speak and act like a lady, so she can claim the place in society she was denied. As they team up to take on the ton, Bram knows she’s hiding something even from him. Despite the deception he sees behind those sparkling blue eyes, Bram wants to believe that Maybelle’s love is no lie. But it seems fate has served him up his just desserts in the likes of this determined damsel.
Read on for my thoughts on One Rogue At A Time. No true spoilers, promise.
The saying, “Be careful what you wish for… you just might get it.” comes to mind in this delightful Regency tale.
Maybelle or better known as Bluebell knows that she is more than her surrounding or circumstances. She knows that she is the daughter of nobility, she simply has to prove her mother’s claim. That may be easier plotted than accomplished, as she will soon discover.
Bramwell or Bram has a reputation as being able to get the impossible done when it comes to physical strengths and cunning. The son of a Duke, admittedly on the wrong side of the blanket, Bram is accustomed to living on the edge of polite society. But that has never stopped “society” from requesting his services. Right now he is in the middle of nowhere or close to it having been dumped by the two so called society members he recently assisted. Now he’s on his own, in the country with nothing to get him into too much trouble. Yet.
When Bram and Bluebell first meet it’s difficult to decide who is winning the outmaneuvering, over manipulating each other war. In truth, they are rather evenly matched. Bram wants the beautiful young miss for a bit of a romp before heading back to London – Bluebell wants the rogue for the services he can provide like transportation to get the proof of her mother’s claim and an education on how to be a lady. Eventually it will become obvious that they can mutually benefit each other.
Neither one really counted on caring about the other beyond what they could do for them at that moment. But emotions, definitely lust and perhaps love will change how they see each other. And once Bluebell gets her wish and is presented to her family – life will never be quite the same again.
One Rogue At A Time is full of sass, charm, cunning and and getting exactly what you needed instead of what you thought you wanted. I enjoyed this couple’s tale very much. I loved how my heart was captured by them, and even how at times it was broken. Bram certainly can come off as a bit of a cad, but Bluebell wasn’t entirely innocent in her usage of him either. They balanced each other, and brought out both the worst and the best in each other.
Definitely a charming addition to the Rakes and Rogues series. I’ll be waiting for the next story, hopefully soon.
*I received an e-ARC of One Rogue At A Time from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. That does not change what I think of this novel.*
