Marissa Spencer’s world has been turned upside down since waking up one morning with magical powers. She has no idea where they came from and controlling them has not been easy. To make matters worse, these new abilities seem to have brought with them a mysterious evil force that torments her dreams and tracks her down dark alleys. With the help of her sexy PI boss, Jack Slade—whom Marissa has always had a crush on—she will have to fight a battle for power that began before she was born. Along the way, she’ll discover a family she didn’t know she had, an inheritance she may not want, a strength she never knew was within her, and a love she’d only dreamed of.
The premise of this novel drew me in. I mean, really, who wouldn’t be just a bit freaked out to find out they suddenly had magical powers? Especially when you know you hadn’t had a single drink the night before!
Read on for my thoughts on Magic Found. No true spoilers, promise.
**I received an e-ARC from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review of Magic Found. This in no way changes what I thought of the book.**
To say that Marissa is having a weird day would be an understatement. The dream that jarred her awake was frightening and seemed more like a memory than a dream. The hooded figure looming over her put off such a sense of evil that the remnants of the nightmare stayed with her long after she left her bed.
While in the shower trying to shake off the odd dream, the second weird moment of the day appeared – right outside of her shower curtain. Shortly after getting herself soaking wet, Marissa realized with annoyance that she forgot to bring a towel in with her. Imagine her terror when a dark shape slowly moved toward her. She could see its outline through the shower curtain and was ready to defend herself from… a blue towel hanging in the air, with nothing holding it up.
That’s enough of a tease. Because the unexplained magic just keeps happening – and how Marissa’s life is about to change is the point of the novel.
Magic Found is a fun and sexy story about a woman who has no knowledge about her family – she was left on a church doorstep as a babe. It is her discovery about how she ended up on those steps, where and who her family are and how the heck did the magic start?
Her crush on her boss Jack will turn into romance while they both search for answers. Some steamy sex scenes, relatives found and mysteries somewhat solved and new mysteries revealed will be discovered before the last page of this novel. (the first book in a new series, so look for more stories)
I enjoyed Magic Found. It will not go on my top favorites list – but it was a good story. I wish though that there had been more showing me the action from the characters point of view or engagement rather than telling me about it. But that is a personal preference of mine in the stories I read.
There are three other novels in this series. I will probably read them, eventually. I’d like to know the rest of the story to see how it develops. But with my current reading list, that may be a few months down the road.
Would I recommend it? Yes, it’s a good story. It’s just not a great, “you must read this now” kind of story – in my opinion. Your’s might be very different. I just wanted a bit more from the novel that I didn’t find.
