Alexandra Brighton has spent the last five years in Boston, with all evidence of the wild frontier girl she used to be erased. Before she settles down, she’s determined to visit her childhood home. When she finds herself far from her destination, she has no choice but to have the rugged Malcolm Kincaid escort her to Montana.

Now that Malcolm finally has the name and location of the man who killed his brother, he has no interest in protecting a pampered Eastern lady. But something about her tells him he just can’t leave her behind. And by the time they reach Montana, Malcolm must decide if seeing justice done for past wrongs is worth losing a future with a woman he never expected to need.

Titles in the Runaway Brides series include:  The Gunslinger’s Vow – The Cowboy’s Honor – The Outlaw’s Heart

If you are a reader who needs to know about every possible connecting story to a series, there is a short “introduction to the series” story entitled A Christmas Reunion in the 2017 Christmas Anthology Christmas in a Cowboy’s Arms

Title:  The Gunslinger’s Vow
Series:  Runaway Brides #1
Author:  Amy Sandas
Genre:  Western Historical Romance
Published:  June 5, 2018
Publisher:  Sourcebooks Casablanca
My Rating:  4.5 stars

I have enjoyed Amy Sandas’ Regency Romance series, especially her Fallen Ladies series, so I was definitely excited to see that she is moving into another genre that I enjoy Western Historical Romance.  And just as a note of interest, there is a short introduction to the series story entitled A Christmas Reunion in the 2017 Christmas Anthology Christmas in a Cowboy’s Arms… if like me, you enjoy knowing all the details.

Alexandra has been set back East by her father to live with her Aunt.  It’s been five years since Alex left home, with the freedoms she loved and where her heart seems to still live.  She’s accepted a marriage proposal from a prominent, wealthy man who would be a prize for any woman except for her.  Almost immediately she realizes that she’s made a mistake, a passionate marriage is what she truly wants not some imitation of one… so with the help of two friends she steals away to head back to Montana for answers.  What she finds is far more than she ever expected.

Malcolm is a bounty hunter with an agenda of his own as he tracks down his prey.  The last thing he wants to do is babysit a clueless, fancy Eastern woman as she makes her way to Montana.  But circumstances and Alex eventually wear him down as he allows her to follow along.  Malcolm has had one goal, find the murderer of his younger brother.  That has consumed him for years.  Now he’s falling for a woman who is not at all what he expected, and maybe they could have a future but he will not, cannot give up his goal.  His brother will have justice, even if Malcolm has to sacrifice his own happiness with Alex.

I love a couple that can verbally spar with each other without the relationship falling apart.  Malcolm and Alex do a lot of word battles, mainly about how stubborn the other one is.  I liked this couple very much and rooted for them to find a way to their own happiness.  There are a few twists along the way, secondary characters to get a few chuckles from and enjoyable scenes, a vile villain and secrets to be revealed.  In all, I completely enjoyed myself in this world, and I’m really looking forward to the next story.  If you love Western Historical Romance then you’d enjoy The Gunslinger’s Vow.  I’d definitely recommend this one to any Western Historical Romance reader who loves a good romance, a lot of bantering between the couple, some danger, some sexy moments and at the base a really good love story.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
